Better than Moonpig: Best Moonpig Alternatives

Better than Moonpig: Best Moonpig Alternatives

Looking for better alternatives to Moonpig or Funky Pigeon? They may both be well-known greeting card brands but there are plenty of Moonpig alternatives if you want to buy a greeting card with more style and personality.

Without a doubt, whatever their card design quality, Moonpig and Funky Pigeon are the market leaders for personalised greeting cards that can be bought online so let’s take a look at how Moonpig and Funky Pigeon compare then explore some alternatives.

Moonpig vs Funky Pigeon: Which is better?

Card Design:

Both Moonpig and Funky Pigeon have made their name from the online personalisation functions they offer but the actual card designs they stock are pretty poor. Of the two, Funky Pigeon’s designs are marginally better, with brighter, more colourful, younger and more upbeat styling across the range.

Both Moonpig and Funky Pigeon follow the stack em high shopping model with endless cards but a distinct lack of style across both brand’s collections. Moonpig’s humour in particular is very low brow and off-putting. Moonpig is owned by Photobox and Funky Pigeon by Card Factory and those influences are noticeable in their collections.

Card Range:

Looking across the range of cards at both Moonpig and Funky Pigeon, for everything from birthday cards to Valentine’s Day cards and Christmas cards, the same trends emerge.

Most of Moonpig’s cards are photo cards or text-heavy cards with tongue in cheek and low brow humour. The design of Moonpig’s photo cards is poor, with an overall feeling of rushed designs which haven’t received much attention.

The colours across Moonpig’s card collection are gaudy and there’s an overall look to Moonpig’s cards that points to low value, although they’re not cheap. Maybe their priority is their personalisation tool rather than the actual cards.

Turn to Funky Pigeon and you immediately feel and see the difference. From birthday to Christmas and Valentine’s, Funky Pigeon’s cards are much better quality than Moonpig's. Funky Pigeon's cards are image-led with a much better tone and sentimental feeling all of which are largely lacking in Moonpig’s card collection.

Funky Pigeon's humour is tasteful and positive whilst its colourways are much more appealing than Moonpig's. Funky Pigeon have a better balance of photo, image and text cards. With Funky Pigeon’s photo cards featuring much better designs than Moonpig’s. In general, the overall shopping experience as you browse Funky Pigeon’s card categories is much better.

Gifts:

As with their card collections, both Moonpig and Funky Pigeon have lots of gifts.

Moonpig has lots of familiar gifts that you can find on the high street as well as things like theatre tickets to well-known productions and edible gifts from independent stores.

Funky Pigeon’s gifts are a bit more unique than Moonpig's. There are many matches with Moonpig in the type of gifts they sell and Moonpig has more flowers to choose from but overall Funky Pigeon’s gifts are of a higher quality.

User Experience:

If you like choice, Moonpig has endless options, more than Funky Pigeon. However, as a shopper too much choice is overwhelming and Moonpig’s site design is very in your face.

Funky Pigeon has better quality gifts and cards than Moonpig and Funky Pigeon's cards can be sent either blank or personalised. However Moonpig’s personalisation tool is easier to use, tgis is where Moonpig excels in the card market. Moonpig has more personalisation options than Funky Pigeon, including AI and handwriting tools, emojis, stickers and more.

Funky Pigeon has all the essential personalisation options like stickers so if you don’t like too much choice and can bear the slower personalisation tool, you might find Funky Pigeon more pleasing to use than Moonpig.

Delivery: For delivery options, the offer at Moonpig and Funky Pigeon is pretty evenly matched. However, on fastest delivery Moonpig just slips ahead with next day delivery available up to 9pm whilst Funky Pigeon’s stops at 4pm.

Rewards:

Moonpig’s reward scheme, Moonpig Plus, is much better than Funky Pigeon’s which feels like a bit of a grudging offer rather than a generous reward.

If you spend £9.99 at Moonpig you can get: 30% off cards, 50% off a special selection, 40% off when you buy 5 more, your first card free and more.

Funky Pigeon’s My Funky Reward Scheme isn’t straightforward to use. You have to be invited to join the scheme after you’ve bought something.

The essence of the My Funky Reward scheme is that if you pay £15 you can earn cashback from Funky Pigeon and their wide range of partners. This cashback can be exchanged for a cash payment into your bank account once it reaches £5.

You receive credit when you join which can be used at a Funky Pigeon and their partners. You also get a monthly bonus when you shop with their partners if you send a copy of the receipt to Funky Pigeon. There’s also 20% off gift cards, 10% cashback at their partner stores and more.

Costs:

Funky Pigeon and Moonpig’s costs are matched unless you want to choose Funky Pigeon’s smallest card size which is £2.99, although Moonpig has an e-card for the same price (bar 1p difference) which feels like a cop out in order to match its rivals lowest price point.

With both brands seemingly obsessed with bigger and bigger cards, neither option is probably popular. Delivery costs are pretty much the same however Moonpig has better delivery options than Funky Pigeon, offering both next day and scheduled delivery.

So Who’s Better Moonpig or Funky Pigeon?

Speaking in Internet Retailing, Moonpig CEO Nickyl Raithatha credits Moonpig’s bells and whistles, like AI predictive text, stickers and lots of photo options as the reason for their success.

In comparison, Louise Marshall, Funky Pigeon’s head of branding, speaking in Creative Salon, says Funky Pigeon’s new focus is on heartfelt gifting with heart and soul.

And that’s the thing, at the end of the day, most of us are not shopping for cards with emojis, we want beautiful, quality greeting cards so for that reason, Funky Pigeon is better than Moonpig because it has marginally better cards at the same price. But if you’re looking for a quality greeting card, neither is what you want.
